Celebrate Spring at Trailside Museum of Natural History

Annual event to include tree climbing, live animals


Trailside Museum of Natural History in River Forest invites the public to celebrate the arrival of spring with a special day of free activities during the annual Spring Festival on Sunday, May 5.


During the event, attendees can enjoy a variety of activities, including guided wildflower walks, tree climbing with a pulley and harness, and building bird houses to take home. Visitors can meet live animals, observe birds being banded, learn garden information, and participate in pond dipping, seed planting and children’s crafts.

Trailside Museum of Natural History, located at 738 Thatcher Ave. in River Forest, is one of six nature centers operated by the Forest Preserves of Cook County. Visits are always free, and the nature centers offer a variety of educational events and festivals throughout the year.


Parking for the Spring Festival is available at Trailside’s lot on the south side of Chicago Avenue, as well as across the street at Thatcher Woods. Makin’ Music Bluegrass Jam

Sunday, May 12 • 1 pm

Trailside Museum of Natural History – 738 Thatcher Ave, River Forest

Come out to a round-robin style jam. Bring a song to play with the group or just come to listen.

Kids can make a simple musical instrument, and then join in the jam! Bring your fiddles, mandolins, guitars and banjos, too. All are welcome to jam or listen.


River Kayaking 101

Friday, May 17 • 11 am-12:30 pm on 3:30-5 pm

Trailside Museum parking lot – 738 Thatcher Ave, River Forest

Introductory class provided prior to a short paddle along the Des Plaines River to Maywood Grove. Perfect for new kayakers; ages 5 & up. Registration required, call 312-533-5751.


Guided Spring Nature Hikes

Sunday, May 26 • 1 pm

Trailside Museum of Natural History – 738 Thatcher Ave, River Forest

Enjoy a naturalist-guided nature hike on our trails as we discover signs of spring, from wildflowers to baby birds.


Adult Archery

Thursday, May 30 • 12-2 pm

Thatcher Woods – Chicago Ave west of Thatcher Ave, River Forest

Stay active and try your hand at a new or old pastime. Enjoy a brief nature hike on the trails while you wait for your next turn. Ages 18 & up. Registration required for groups of 10 or more. Call 708-386-4042.
