Forest Preserves of Cook County to host “All About Fire” event

Nov 10, 2016

As part of the Forest Preserves of Cook County’s Outdoor Adventures event series, the public is invited to learn about fire during All About Fire from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the Caldwell Woods Warming Shelter in Chicago.

During this free, family-friendly event, attendees will learn about the benefits of fire and what it can do for our land. Attendees will also learn about safe practices for fire building and containment.

“We will have a number of station-based activities that will help educate attendees on a wide range of fire knowledge – history, safe practices, fire building techniques, fire as a tool for land management, and more,” explained Justin Mercer, program coordinator with the Forest Preserves. “Fun activities will also enhance attendees’ experiences, such as getting to make and use a bow drill to create friction fire, making a creative re-use fire starter, and taking part in a fire building competition. A ‘fire-themed’ snack will be served during the indoor portion of the program.”

The event will conclude with attendees having the opportunity to build their own fire, learn how to prepare food over an open fire, and roast free marshmallows and hot dogs.

The Forest Preserves’ Outdoor Adventures event series includes the opportunity for attendees to meet up for outdoor skill building, hiking, exploring, nature-based art making and more.

Caldwell Woods Warming Shelter is located at 6350 W Devon Ave in Chicago. For more information on the event, call 312-533-5751. A complete listing of all programs is posted to the Forest Preserves’ events website at with seasonal brochures that can be downloaded.
