Third Annual Forest Preserves Photo Contest

Photo Contest

It’s that time of year again! We’re looking for your very best photos of Forest Preserves landscapes, close-ups of plants, insects, birds and other wildlife, pictures that highlight the seasons and shots of people enjoying the outdoors or participating in our recreational offerings.

 

This year’s winning photos will be showcased in the 2015 Forest Preserves of Cook County Wall Calendar, on FPDCC.com, on Forest Preserves social media accounts, in an exhibit displayed at the Cook County Building in downtown Chicago and in various suburban courthouses. Each winning photographer will also receive 10 copies of the calendar as well as a Forest Preserves prize package.

 

Contest Timeline

Please note these important dates and deadlines:

 

  • September 1-15 – Submission period via Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and email.
  • September 16-22 – Finalists notified via comment on their submission or an email reply.
  • September 29 – Deadline for finalists to submit high resolution versions of their photos to forestpreservedistrict@gmail.com.
  • October 1 to 10 – Official public voting period at Facebook.com/FPDCC.
  • October 15 – Winners announced.

 

 

Entering the Contest

Enter the contest by submitting your photos of the Forest Preserves from September 1 to 15 in one of the following ways*:

 

  • Instagram – Post your photo with a caption, the #FPphotos14 tag and a mention of @FPDCC.
  • Twitter – Post your photo with a caption, the #FPphotos14 tag and a mention of @FPDCC.
  • Facebook – Post your photo with a caption and the #FPphotos14 tag directly on our page (Facebook.com/FPDCC).
  • Email – Don’t have any of these accounts? Want to be sure you entered correctly? You can also email forestpreservedistrict@gmail.com with your photo and caption to enter.

 

To officially enter the contest, make sure to follow these guidelines for the three critical parts of your submission*:

 

  • Photo – All photographs must have been taken in the Forest Preserves of Cook County (this includes Brookfield Zoo or Chicago Botanic Garden). To be eligible for the contest you must be able to provide your photo in a digital format such as JPEG or TIF at a minimum resolution of 3600 x 2700 pixels at 300 dpi and a maximum file size of 24MB. If your photo is selected as a finalist, you must email a file that meets these specifications to forestpreservedistrict@gmail.com by September 29 to be included in public voting. We will notify finalists with a comment on their submission post (and by private message or email when possible). It is the responsibility of the selected finalist to provide a file that meets the specifications and deadline. Photos included in the calendar will be horizontal (vertical photos should be cropped before submitting).
  • Caption – All submissions must include a caption with the specific location within the Forest Preserves of Cook County where it was shot and the approximate date when the photo was taken (i.e.: Carl Hansen Woods, fall 2013;  Poplar Creek Trail, March 2014 or Tampier Lake, June 26, 2011).
  • Tag & Mention – All submissions to Instagram, Twitter and Facebook must include the #FPphotos14 tag to be officially entered in the contest. On Instagram and Twitter you must also mention the Forest Preserves official account (@FPDCC) in your post. On Facebook you must post your photo directly on our page (Facebook.com/FPDCC).

 

*Some additional restrictions apply, please review the official rules (below) before entering the contest.

 

 

Public Voting

A panel of Forest Preserves of Cook County judges will narrow submissions to a group of finalists before voting opens to the public.

 

Public voting for the winning photos will take place through our Facebook page (Facebook.com/FPDCC) between October 1 and 10.

 

During the voting period, anyone with a Facebook account can vote for a photo by pressing the “like” button on that photo in the official photo contest gallery.

 

 

 

 

Third Annual Forest Preserves Photo Contest Official Rules

 

General Rules

  • By submitting your photo, you are confirming that the photo is your own work and you own the rights to distribute the image.
  • Photos should feature Forest Preserves of Cook County landscapes, close-ups of plants, insects, birds and other wildlife, pictures that highlight the seasons, and shots of people enjoying the outdoors or participating in our recreational offerings.
  • Photos that were selected as finalists in past years’ contests are not eligible.
  • There is a submission limit of five (5) entries/photos per person, regardless of submission method.
  • All submissions must be free of watermarks (All winning photos included in the calendar will be credited appropriately.)
  • Please make your best efforts to identify plants or wildlife if they are the subject of your photo and include their identification in your caption. (i.e. Turkey Vulture flying over Tampier Slough, Palos Township Forest Preserve, July 10, 2012).
  • You must obtain (and supply upon request) the name of and written permission from any persons included in the photos you submit, authorizing their image to be used in Forest Preserves of Cook County digital and/or print materials. Entries of people for whom you are not able to supply the appropriate written releases cannot be included in the calendar and other Forest Preserves of Cook County materials.
  • Photos including nudity, profanity, commercial or political interests, graffiti, or anything wildly off-topic are strictly prohibited. The Forest Preserves of Cook County reserves the right to disqualify any photographs that are deemed inappropriate.

 

 

Submission Requirements

  • Photos eligible for the 2014 photo contest must be submitted via Instagram, Twitter, Facebook or email between September 1 and September 15, 2014. Entries received after or before this period will not be eligible for inclusion in the 2015 calendar. To be eligible for the contest, photos must be submitted in one of the following formats:
    • An Instagram post including photo with a caption, the #FPphotos14 tag and a mention of @FPDCC.
    • A Twitter post including photo with a caption, the #FPphotos14 tag and a mention of @FPDCC.
    •  A Facebook post including photo with a caption and the #FPphotos14 tag directly on the Forest Preserves page(Facebook.com/FPDCC).
    • An Email to forestpreservedistrict@gmail.com including photo and caption.
  • All entries must meet these requirements:

The Forest Preserves of Cook County reserves the right to adjust any deadline(s) as the result of causes beyond its immediate control.

 

Winning Photos

The Forest Preserves of Cook County judging panel will select the contest finalists. Public voting for the winning photos will take place through the Forest Preserves of Cook County Facebook page (Facebook.com/FPDCC) between October 1 and 10. During the voting period, anyone with a Facebook account can vote for a photo by pressing the “like” button on that photo in the official photo contest gallery.

 

The photograph with the most votes overall will be selected as the cover of the 2015 Forest Preserves of Cook County Wall Calendar. In the event of a tie, the cover photo is selected by the Forest Preserves of Cook County judging panel. Eleven (11) other photographs from the general public will be featured on monthly calendar pages, selected from seasonally appropriate photos with the highest vote totals (at the discretion of the Forest Preserves of Cook County judging panel). The final monthly photo will be the winner of the Forest Preserves of Cook County staff contest. Runner-up photos may be used as auxiliary photos in the calendar.

 

Winning photos will be included in the 2015 Forest Preserves of Cook County Wall Calendar, on FPDCC.com, Forest Preserves social media accounts, an exhibit displayed at the Cook County Building in downtown Chicago and in various suburban courthouses. Each winning photographer will receive 10 copies of the calendar as well as a Forest Preserves prize package.

 

The Forest Preserves of Cook County shall determine winner eligibility in its sole and absolute discretion. All decisions made by the judges are final. Members of the Forest Preserves judging panel are not eligible to submit entries to the staff contest.

 

Photo Rights

Your photographs help the Forest Preserves of Cook County spread the message of how important it is to protect our region’s amazing diversity of wildlife, plants and habitats. Thank you for helping to further our mission through your photography.

 

You will retain all rights to any photograph you submit. You grant the Forest Preserves of Cook County rights to use your photograph in conjunction with the 2015 Photo Contest upon submission. Before you are formally honored by inclusion in the 2015 Forest Preserves of Cook County Wall Calendar, the Forest Preserves of Cook County will contact you to confirm that you wish to grant us rights to your image as described below.

 

The Forest Preserves of Cook County gains a royalty-free, nonexclusive, world-wide, irrevocable right, in perpetuity, to:

 

  • Use the submitted photograph in its 2015 Forest Preserves of Cook County Wall Calendar and related photo exhibition, on its website, in connection with the photo contest and calendar, and on its social media pages.
  • As conditions of this permission, the Forest Preserves of Cook County shall credit all photographs used with the caption and “Person’s Name”, when the full name is available, or by the participants social media username when the participant’s full name is unavailable.
