We are saddened to report that Commissioner Dennis Deer passed away on Sunday, June 24, at the age of 51. The contributions made by Commissioner Deer to the Forest Preserves of Cook County will be enjoyed by residents and visitors for many years to come.
Commissioner Deer was an incredible advocate for the Forest Preserves and was a steadfast supporter of increasing resources to the Preserves so Cook County residents could enjoy and benefit from our local nature for generations. In his role as Vice Chair of the Forest Preserves Finance Committee, Commissioner Deer deeply understood the need for increased financial support. He helped make history when the 2022 ballot referendum was passed, ensuring the Preserves has continued investment in nature restoration and the programming offered to residents.
With a passion for mental health advocacy, Commissioner Deer shared with constituents the potential to positively impact mental wellbeing through time spent in the tranquility of our woodlands, prairies and more.
“Commissioner Deer was a kind man and a committed public servant. His background in mental health helped not only the Forest Preserves, but all Cook County residents. He knew that spending time in nature improves our wellbeing, and he encouraged residents to get out and enjoy the many amenities available in the Forest Preserves,” said Eileen Figel, interim General Superintendent of the Forest Preserves.
In addition to the Finance Committee, Commissioner Deer also served on the Forest Preserve District Board committees for botanic garden, contract compliance, legislation and intergovernmental relations, real estate, rules, and zoological.
