The Forest Preserve District of Cook County unveiled its first official Recreation Master Plan at a meeting of the Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, March 19, 2013. The plan outlines a variety of safe and accessible outdoor recreational opportunities that build on the District’s long history of conservation and education. It calls for compatible recreational uses that are sensitive to natural resources and emphasize the importance of environmental awareness, open space advocacy, and stewardship.

New recreational opportunities and improvements will be funded by approximately $3.5 million in general obligation funds issued in 2012. Many of the activities identified will also provide support for the District’s recent Camping Master Plan, which was released in January 2013.

Highlights include recommendations for improving trails, picnic groves and other traditional recreation areas, as well as adding additional sites and activities throughout the County that will engage new users, promote healthy lifestyles and connect people to nature.
