Sacred Clay Workshop: The Tradition and Protection of African American Face Jugs

Sun, November 8 • 1:00 pm
Free
people entering the Sand Ridge Nature Center building in South Holland

This workshop will explore the history, cultural significance and ecological knowledge embedded in the African American tradition of face jugs. Originating from African ceramic practices and maintained through slavery and beyond, face jugs were more than artistic expressions—they were powerful symbols of protection, spirituality and resilience. During the workshop, attendees will create their own face jugs, engaging with the ancestral practice of molding earth into vessels of meaning and intention. Through hands-on experience and discussion, this program will highlight the enduring relationship between African American traditions, nature and the wisdom passed down through generations.
