Underground Railroad Presentation
Come visit Sand Ridge Nature Center to hear Calumet City’s own Annamarie Swails-Preston do a presentation on her great-grandfather, Stephen Atkin Swails. Among the first of many things, the movie Glory depicts that he was the first African-American soldier promoted to commissioned rank as a line officer and appointed the company’s first sergeant. His parents also assisted in the Underground Railroad. So come out to hear his amazing tale while viewing some memorabilia.
