Are you making a list of priorities and intentions for 2025? Do you have an annual set of New Year’s Resolutions? Visits to the Forest Preserves of Cook County can help fulfill a wide range of goals if you know where to look.
Volunteer
Have you resolved to volunteer to give back to your community? Winter lends itself to large-scale restoration projects that require brush and tree removal because frozen ground protects the soil—and also because most wildlife is dormant, reducing the impact on animals.
Throughout the Forest Preserves, thousands of dedicated volunteers head out to help with restoration efforts all year long. From cutting invasive species like honeysuckle and buckthorn to harvesting native seeds to cleaning up litter, there are myriad ways to get out and give back in the new year.
Try Something New
If this is the year to try different experiences, there is a wide array of possibilities at the Forest Preserves. Whether you’ve always wanted to strap on some cross-country skis and experience an exhilarating trek on groomed ski trails or you’re ready to pick up a bow and arrow to test your aim with archery, the Forest Preserves has robust programs to help you explore new hobbies and activities.
Learn Something New
Maybe you want to expand your horizons. Join us in the Forest Preserves to explore topics ranging from becoming more sustainable at home and in your community to learning about native animals and plants.
Did you know? There is plenty of nature happenings in winter. Mammals like foxes and coyotes remain active in winter, while reptiles and amphibians go into semi-hibernation (called brumation) but will come out of dormancy on warmer days.
Meet New People
Have you resolved to get out and meet new people? There’s no better venue to find folks with similar interests than being out in nature. Whether joining volunteer efforts, attending a nature-inspired arts and crafts program, or participating in a guided walk, there are endless opportunities to spend time outdoors and make new friends.
Improve Mental and Physical Health
The new year is a great time to make changes to improve your mental or physical health. Consider how you can use nature as a resource for exercise, meditation and wellbeing, whether with family or friends or on your own.
The Forest Preserves offer up heart-pumping fitness hikes throughout the year; and those looking for a slower, more contemplative walk can join a Forest Therapy or Photography Walk or a guided Walk & Talk that integrates interpretation about local ecology.
